Quilled Jhumkas painted with Nailpolish colors

Jhumkas are a must have jewelry in Indian Traditional Wedding. Traditional South Indian  Jhumkas are also known as "Jumkis". In initial days, these are made only with gold, but now we have a wide range of jhumkas that are made and decorated with silver, pearls, crystals, kundans etc which gives a classic and elegant look over Saree, Half-Saree, Ghagra-Choli etc.

Every time you may not get the jhumkas that matches to your outfit, but that is past........... because now you can make your own paper quilled jhumkas. Oh....what if you don't have the quilling strips of your own color choice(like i faced earlier), that problem is also solved...........we are using nail polish colors to paint the jhumkas, which are available almost every wear at very low prices

This Tutorial will give you a step-by-step explanation on how to make paper Quilled Jhumkas and paint them with nail polish colors to make them match your outfit.

You need:
  1. Quilling strips -  8 strips(any color) of 5mm width & 14" long, 3 strips(any color) of 3mm width & 16" long
  2. Slotted quilling tool
  3. Jhumka making mold
  4. Border buddy tool
  5. Scissors
  6. Glue
  7. Nail polish colors(I used black & gold colors.... can use acrylic colors instead of nail polish colors)
  8. Jump rings
  9. Earring hooks

Procedure:

  • Take four strips of 14"long & 5 mm width and glue them back to back to form a long strip. Using this strip form a tightly rolled coil by inserting one end of quilling strip into the slot of the quilling tool and turn the tool (hold the coil tight with fingers) till the completion of the strip and shut it using glue.

  • Keep this coil on the top of the appropriate slot of jhumka making mold ( here I used "D" slot) and gently press the coil downwards to get the jhumka shape. Coat inside of the jhumka with glue(can use your fingers to spread evenly) and let it dry completely. By doing this the shape of the jhumka will be secured.
Note: If you don't have this mold then you can make the jhumka shape just by using your fingers

  • Take a strip of 3 mm width and 4" long ( cut a single 16" long strip in to 4 equal parts) and by using border buddy tool form an open loop coil of small size.  Similarly take another 3 mm strip of 8"long(cut a single 16" long strip in to 2 equal halves) and form an open loop coil. By using your fingers slightly pinch one end of coil to make a petal shape.
Note:  If you don't have border buddy tool, then you can use any circular shaped object like pencil or something similar.

  • Now, by using black and gold color nail polishes, paint the jhumkas, loops and petals evenly from all the sides and allow it to dry completely(don't touch until it is completely dried).

  • Take a 3 mm strip (can use 5 mm strip also) and paint it with gold color nail polish. After drying, wrap this strip around the Jhumka as shown in the below pic and cut the extra strip. Apply glue to the open loop coil and place it on the top of the jhumka and similarly glue the petal shape and attach it at the center of the open loop coil. Fix jump rings & earring hooks to make it complete.

  • To make them more sparkling, coat them with glitter nail polish. Now the Jhumka Ear rings are ready to match your outfit.
