Are you fond of wearing ear studs ....... then here is the tutorial for making Quilled Studs which is easy to make and looks descent for everyday use.
Materials Required:
- 3mm Quilling strips - 2 brown color strips of 16" long - 4 brown color strips of 8" long (take 16" strip and cut it into two equal halves) - 2 yellow color strips of 8" long (take 16" strip and cut it into two equal halves)
- Slotted quilling tool
- Border buddy tool (round shape)
- Stud base
- Half cut pearls of white color
- Pencil
- Glue
- Scissors
- Chart paper or any thick sheet
Procedure:
- Take a brown color strip of 16" long and form a tightly rolled coil by inserting one end of quilling strip into the slot of the quilling tool and turn the tool (hold the coil tight with fingers) till the completion of the strip and shut it using glue as shown in the below images.
- Take a 8" strip and by using border buddy tool form an open loop coil of small size. This procedure had to be done for total two brown and one yellow color strips Note: If you don't have border buddy tool, then you can use any circular shaped object like pencil or something similar.
- Hold the coil with your fingers and slightly pinch one end of coil to make the petal shape. Repeat this for other two coils also.
- Now take the tight coil as a reference, draw the shape of the coil on the thick sheet and cut the same. similarly cut three more(two for each ear stud).Take this circle shaped piece of sheet, make a hole at center such that the stud can pass through the hole and by using glue fix the stud to it. Take another piece of sheet, glue it over this stud then hold tightly for few minutes and allow it to dry for a while. Note: If you are taking thin sheet then take more number of layers for attaching to make it sturdy.
- Meanwhile, glue the petals to the coil as shown below and allow it to dry completely. Attach the above stud base to this and hold tightly for few minutes to dry. Then, decorated it with half cut pearls and your petal shaped ear studs are ready now.
To make them water proof:
- Coat them with a -
- clear nail polish
- clear varnishes
- crystal coat glaze
- Coating with clear nail polish (the first one in the above list) is an inexpensive way to water proof any paper jewelry but you don’t get glossy shine with this.
- The other two waterproofing methods (varnish and glaze) are slightly expensive, but it will give an attractive glossy look to the jewelry. (If you are making them for sale, then better prefer one of these two. You can purchase them on Amazon.)
- By using the above waterproofing techniques, the jewelry doesn’t get damaged if water drops accidentally on it - with that being said, let me also warn you that it doesn’t make jewelry 100% waterproof.
- Prefer not to wear these while taking bath or when going out in a heavy rain.
Thanks for reading. I hope you like it.
